The steps needed to be followed for deleted documents file recovery are almost identical to those required to recover deleted video files. When attempting any type of data recovery it is important to remember that a file is a file is a file. The only difference between them is their structural content and the extension attached to each. In terms of choosing a file recovery program this is an important distinction.

Most quality data recovery programs such as those offered by Remo software are designed to recognize all of the popular and currently in use file types such as Microsoft Word documents or Microsoft Excel accounting files. If a program for file recovery is designed to recognize video file types such as .AVIs and .MOVs then the search and recover program will quickly find those recently deleted video files and place them on a list of recoverable information. An interesting exception to this is the recovery of digital camera RAW files. These are special file types created by each high end camera manufacturer such as Canon or Nikon. To locate and recover these files one must purchase a specific digital photo recovery program that addresses the recognition of these file types.

There are two issues related to data recovery that seem to confuse many computer owners. The first is the process required to recover deleted files from external hard drive storage. For some reason many computer users do not understand that an external hard drive or any other type of external digital media is actually easier to recover files from than their desktop or laptop computer’s internal hard drive. The reason for this quite simple. When attempting to recover lost or deleted files from your computer’s internal hard drive, the very process of downloading the data recovery program onto your computer may erase the files you are hoping to recover. Files lost on an external drive cannot be overwritten during the data recovery program installation process.

The second issue that many computer owners do not understand is what is required to delete files forever. Simply emptying your Windows recycle bin or directly deleting a file from external digital storage does not erase the underlying file information. To delete files forever you must overwrite the information in the area of your hard drive that held the original file. The best way to do this is to use a file shredder program that purposely writes new random information onto the file areas.

On the surface digital photo recovery seems to be no more difficult than the recovery of any other type of accidentally deleted or corrupted file. One purchases and downloads a quality file recovery program and directs that program to scan through their entire computer hard drive. The scan should return a listing of all recoverable digital image files of the types commonly associated with digital photos. These would include JPGs, jpegs, GIFs, etc. The process of recovering digital photo images should be no more difficult than recovering Word documents, emails or any other commonly used file type. What marks digital photo recovery as more difficult is not what takes place after you have successfully downloaded your photographs from your digital camera onto your computer’s internal hard drive.

What makes recovery of digital image files different and difficult is that very often we assume a successful transfer of our precious photographs only to discover later that many of our images were incomplete. That being the case, the process to recover digital photos requires us to go back to our digital camera’s memory card and search through that media for the original stored digital photographs. These will most likely be in the camera manufacturer’s proprietary format known as a RAW file. When you purchase a program for digital photo recovery, make sure that program will recognize and recover RAW files.
