The data recovery tool required to recover data from external hard drive storage is exactly the same tool used to recover files from crashed hard drive components. However, the use of these programs for each of these specified purposes is completely different. The effort required to recover data from external hard drive storage is far less than that required for crashed hard drive recovery. Recovery of lost or damaged files from an external hard drive or other external digital storage media begins by downloading onto your computer a quality general purpose file recovery program. These are available from Remo software for all of the currently in use operating systems and in support of every major computer manufacturer’s hardware. Once this program is downloaded and installed, all one need do is use the helpful wizard style interface included in the program to choose the type of files we’re looking for and where we suspect they may be.

Data recovery of files stored on a crashed hard drive requires an extra step of downloading and installing this same data recovery program onto a second working computer and directing that program on that computer to open your crashed hard drive. This works because in 95% of all instances failed hard drives deny access simply due to loss of operating system files. By connecting through any working computer you have the benefit of that computer’s working operating system and the ability of your data recovery program to recognize deleted files for recovery.

There are two issues related to data recovery that seem to confuse many computer owners. The first is the process required to recover deleted files from external hard drive storage. For some reason many computer users do not understand that an external hard drive or any other type of external digital media is actually easier to recover files from than their desktop or laptop computer’s internal hard drive. The reason for this quite simple. When attempting to recover lost or deleted files from your computer’s internal hard drive, the very process of downloading the data recovery program onto your computer may erase the files you are hoping to recover. Files lost on an external drive cannot be overwritten during the data recovery program installation process.

The second issue that many computer owners do not understand is what is required to delete files forever. Simply emptying your Windows recycle bin or directly deleting a file from external digital storage does not erase the underlying file information. To delete files forever you must overwrite the information in the area of your hard drive that held the original file. The best way to do this is to use a file shredder program that purposely writes new random information onto the file areas.
